Introduction
The Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen is a powerful fictional telling of the horrors of the Holocaust. Written from the perspective of Hannah, a young Jewish girl who fails to see the importance of her family's history. Members of Hannah's family lived through the Holocaust (and some did not survive). Because of this important experience, these survivors and other members of Hannah's family attempt to impress upon her the significance of remembering. This idea is something Hannah simply does not care to grasp. During an important Passover meal with her family, Hannah is transported back in time. It is shortly after this transportation that Hannah realizes she has been sent to 1942 as a young Jewish girl, known by Hannah's Jewish name, Chaya, in Poland. It is here that she will soon come to realize what it means to face the horrors of the Holocaust.
